The vast majority of people actively looking to buy a property would prefer to buy a new build home, according to survey conducted by housebuilder Barratt Homes.

The study shows that 79% home-hunters would prefer to buy a new home, as opposed to renting or buying a second hand property. The research from Barratt Homes represents a 27% rise in the popularity of new build homes, since the housebuilder conducted the same research in 2008.

Home-hunters were quizzed in spring 2012 and the 5,000 polled noted that new homes offer: lower maintenance, lower running costs, higher specifications and solid construction.

Lisa Preston, Sales Manager for Barratt West Midlands, who commented on the survey said: "Our customers, in Burton-on-Trent are telling us that renting is more expensive than buying and with schemes like the government backed NewBuy 95% mortgage scheme, buyers can buy a brand new home with only a 5% deposit. This scheme is not available in the second hand market."

Housebuilders across the country, including Barratt Homes, are working hard to improve the quality of their new homes - has been recognised by prospective purchasers.

"Those who had put off plans to move, or have been saving for a deposit are surprised at how affordable a new build home can be," Preston added.
