David Wilson Homes is inviting house-hunters looking to buy their first home to a special event at its Portman Square development in Reading, Berkshire this weekend. Taking place between 11.00am and 4.00pm on Saturday 19th January, it's a great opportunity for first-time buyers to see the new homes in person and speak to the sales team and finance experts about their options.

The scheme offers a range of apartments and houses priced from £180,000. However, many first-time buyers may qualify to buy their home under the government-backed FirstBuy scheme, with which they could defer up to 20% of the purchase price and buy with a deposit of just 5%. The deferred amount is provided in the form of an equity loan jointly by the housebuilder and the Homes and Communities Agency. This loan is interest-free for five years and only needs to be repaid at the end of the mortgage period or when the property is sold, whichever is sooner.

First-timers could also benefit from the NewBuy mortgage scheme. This offers home loans that require a deposit of as little as 5%, opening up the possibility of homeownership to those without a large amount of savings and unable to get their down payment from the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad'.

Sharon Smith, sales manager at Portman Square, says: "With the numbers of first-time buyers increasing, now is the perfect time for potential homebuyers to visit us and find out more about how they could purchase their first home with David Wilson Homes. Portman Square has an excellent range of brand new homes to suit a first purchaser including two-bedroom apartments which start at just £180,000, and with FirstBuy a deposit of £9,000 is all that is needed.

"Throughout the day our financial advisors will be able to answer questions about mortgages and the costs associated with buying a new home as well as carry out assessments on mortgage affordability and availability. So I would encourage any first-time buyers to visit us this Saturday for all the information they need to get onto the property ladder in 2013."

Portman Square is built around a landscaped garden square just a few minutes from Reading West station. These new homes are within easy reach of the centre of Reading, with its huge range of shops, restaurants and amenities, and offer convenient access to the town's major transport links, including routes to many destinations from the main line station in the town centre and via the A4 and M4.

If you can't attend the event this weekend, find out more about Portman Square from the David Wilson Homes team on 0845 388 4950.
