Scottish Canals is running an Open Day on Saturday 9 August to celebrate its launch of 15 new residential moorings at the Helix site on the new Grangemouth Marina, right under the noses of Scotland's famous sculpture, the Kelpies.

Visitors can view the site and its facilities, talk to the marketing agents Click-Let Water and reserve their own mooring there on the day. They will even have the opportunity to step aboard the Blue Hue narrowboat, to discover first-hand a taste of life on the water. Moorings start at £1,500 and the maintenance license is only £145 a year.

Situated within a basin at the base of the picturesque Kelpies structures, the new residential moorings offer residents a greener more relaxed life in one of the biggest developments of urban green space.

The moorings will include a range of facilities including on-site storage sheds and a communal landscaped garden for residents' use, as well as electricity, water supplies, pump out and refuse disposal. Situated between Glasgow and Edinburgh, the site has excellent transport routes with train and bus services and the Marina also benefits from on-site parking, making it the ideal location for those who wish to commute.

The area also has a nearby primary and secondary school, making it an ideal location for families looking for a new way of life.

Katie Hughes, director of estates at Scottish Canals, says: "More and more people are considering a move to life on the water and these moorings are an ideal location. People can live a greener, more relaxed and individual way of life on a canal boat, especially with the facilities and attractions of The Helix site."

Iain Withers, who lives on his narrowboat Marbeck Phoenix with his partner Sarah at Auchinstarry, swapped his traditional Edinburgh tenement for a narrowboat. Iain adds: "We saw it as a great adventure. We knew that we didn't want to rent another property and it was an exciting alternative to a conventional house. We spend a large amount of time working from home and we've been able to create a really flexible environment on board to help meet our needs of an office, a studio and a place to live."
